The Hollywood motion picture industry has left us a long legacy of movie memorabilia over the last century, from The Maltese Falcon’s black statuette of ornithological origin to the bullwhip wielded by Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones series. Some of the less recognizable, but equally dazzling, film fare can be found in the jewelry that has found its way onto the silver screen over the years.
The use of jewelry in the movies is so subtle that one would be hard-pressed to name a specific piece – outside of the ultra-spoofy Pink Panther – from a particular film. The golden ring in the Lord of the Rings trilogy is another example that draws more from fantasy lore than the actual world of fashion, although much of the jewelry worn in the world of Bilbo Baggins has been reproduced and sold commercially, as have some of the jewels worn by characters in the various Harry Potter installments, and even from the lesser-known Chronicles of Narnia.
Stores such as The Hollywood Collection offer jewelry worn during the movie biz’s so-called Golden Era, such as Gene Tierney’s ring in The Razor’s Edge (featuring a 4-carat blue corundum stone surrounded by 12 cubic zirconias, emulating Tierney’s sapphire and diamond beauty). They have “collections” for famous actresses, such as the Marilyn Monroe Collection, featuring replicas of the ruby-drop earrings worn in One of a Kind, the diamond pendant necklace from How to Marry a Millionaire and the massive sapphire ring she wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. All are priced below $100.
Another Web-based seller, Costume Jewelry Used in Movies, offers such novelties as the Aztec coin necklace worn by Kiera Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean, cell-phone charms based on Pokemon, Despicable Me and other kiddie-flicks, as well as pieces featured in the popular Twilight series. Thanks to the innovation of online retailers, if you’ve seen it in the theaters, you could be sporting it yourself. It’s the magic of Hollywood.
